This took the shape of fierce repression of the typical fascist kind , with suppression of civil liberties , of press , speech , and meeting , of confiscation of funds , lands , and buildings ; of the proscription of hundreds of organisations , including schools , universities , hospitals , children 's societies , social work clubs , and of course political and labour organizations ; of the sending to prison of hundreds of thousands of men and women ; and of barbarous beating and ill-treatment of prisoners and others . यह ठेठ फासिस्ट किस्म की कठोर दमन के शक़्ल में थी , नागरिक अधिकारों की आजादी , अखबारों , तकरीरों और मीटिंगों पर पाबंदी लगायी गयी , लोगों के जमा किये हुए रूपये-पैसे , उनकी जमीनें और उनके मकान जब्त किये गये.स्कूलों , यूनिवर्सिटियों , अस्पतालों , बच्चों की सोसाइटियों , सामाजिक काम करने वाले क़्लबों वगैरह सैकड़ों सस्थाओं पर पाबंदी लगा दी गयी.बेशक इनमें राजनैतिक और मजदूर संगठन भी लाखों आदमियों-औरतों को जेलों में बंद कर दिया गया , कैदियों और दूसरे लोगों को बेरहमी से मारा-पीटा गया और उनके साथ बदसलूकी की गयी .
